Education, Connection, and Discovery: My First NCPERS Conference in Denver

Attending this year’s NCPERS Annual Conference & Exhibition (ACE) in Denver was not only a professional milestone for me—it was also an incredible educational experience that reshaped my understanding of the industry. As a first-time attendee, I came in with curiosity and left with a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the public pension ecosystem.

A Warm Welcome to a Dynamic Community

The conference kicked off with the First Timers Meet & Greet, which was a thoughtful way to introduce newcomers  to the NCPERS community. It set the tone for a few packed days of learning, collaboration, and connection.

An Immersive Educational Journey

What stood out most was the breadth and depth of the content. With more than 40 sessions across investment strategies, legislative updates, cyber and fiduciary responsibilities, and governance best practices, this was truly a masterclass in public pension administration. Keynotes from Hank Kim, NCPERS Executive Director, and Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young offered timely perspectives on how pension systems are evolving to meet today’s challenges.

As someone still early in my public pension journey, the educational value of this event cannot be overstated. I walked away with a clearer understanding of the responsibilities trustees face, the macroeconomic forces shaping pension strategy, and the technology and innovation helping transform member experiences.

Meaningful Connections and Real Conversations

The networking opportunities were just as impactful. It was inspiring to meet and exchange ideas with trustees, administrators, consultants, and vendors from all across the country. Each conversation deepened my understanding and gave me a broader view of the collaborative nature of this industry.

Experiencing Denver’s Energy

Beyond the conference halls, Denver proved to be the perfect host city. After hours, we enjoyed strolling 16th Street, exploring local culture at the Denver Art Museum, and soaking in the mountain views—all in the city I’m proud to call home.

Looking Ahead with Excitement

This was far more than a typical industry conference—it was a powerful educational experience and a genuine introduction to a passionate, mission-driven community. I’m grateful for the insights, the relationships, and the inspiration I’ve gained, and I’m already looking forward to next year.
